After crossing the Plain of Monfia, the trail enters the deep, shadowy gorge of Wadi Showug, which cuts down Jebel Shayib's north face. This is where we set camp. Toward nightfall, we light up a small fire to warm everybody up before we get into our sleeping bags. Hikers sleep at the foot of the mountain under the stars.

Jebel Shayib means 'Old Man' in Arabic. The name is said to come from the light-colored granite of its summit block, which looks like the head of an old man with silvery hair. Jebel Shayib has several tricky sections, all of which must be passed on the way to reach the summit. Once we reach the higher of the two peaks of the mountain,

Um Dalfa

Um Dalfa is a small spring marking the beginning and end of the Red Sea Mountain Trail. Water is found in two small pools, which have for millennia sustained nomads and travellers in these deserts. A cluster of Bedouin homes stands around Um Dalfa , along with a graveyard. It is easy to access from Hurghada and is a popular tourist spot, but few people venture into the mountains on its doorstep. Hikes feel adventurous and remote, with a mix of walking and scrambling and beautiful views to Jebel Shayib. A good day hike circuit traverses rugged mountains between Um Dalfa and Wadi Abu Eren, returning over a high pass which gazes out to the Red Sea and the pinnacles of Jebel Kalahaya, before descending to Wadi Abu Zagat and Um Dalfa.

An off-road experience with Gazelle Crossover to Umm Dalfa Bedouin village would be an incredible way to escape from the city. The green itself is a large target, but once there, a long putt is often required. Only a careful read of the terrain will save you from the dreaded three-putt. 

The back nine has its own surprises. The longest par four is the fourteenth hole, where nearly 440 meters separate the championship tee from the flag. To have a reasonable shot to the green, the golfer must be courageous enough to carry a bunker on the left side of the fairway that ends 250 meters from the tee.

Another signature hole is the 17th, a long, narrow and gentle dogleg to the right running along the lagoon that separates the back nine from the Steigenberger Golf Resort. Accuracy on the drive is essential to avoid the sand and water traps to the right and the fairway bunker on the left.
